Our current projects include:
Utica Zoo Bird Habitat Garden: In 2023, we planted a new garden inside the zoo thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation. The garden will demonstrate how to create a habitat garden for birds. Come see it in front of the education building!
Utica Zoo Welcome Garden: Our members planted a garden bed at the newly reconstructed zoo entrance to welcome guests. We maintain this garden and continue to add native plants and flowering plants that are beneficial to pollinators. Look for the turtlehead as it blooms in the late summer. It is a host plant for the checkerspot butterfly.
Utica Library Book Bags: In partnership with the Utica Public Library, we provide two book bags which include seasonal gardening and nature-themed books and hands-on activities for elementary aged students. This year we will be conducting workshops at the library to reinforce the themes from the book bags. This project was funded by a grant from the Bonide Foundation.
Wildflower Garden in Sherrill Brook Park: Follow the green footprints to the Garden in the Park! Our members created and continue to maintain this garden as a peaceful resting stop in New Hartford's busy Sherrill Brook Park. We plant, water, and weed weekly during the growing months. This "Garden in the Park" had its official opening in June 2013 and continues to provide an opportunity for our members to contribute to the beautification of our community.
Shaheen Memorial Garden: We provide support to GreenUtica’s Shaheen Memorial Garden by deadheading and weeding during the growing season.
Utica Flower Show: We help District V of the Federated Garden Clubs of NYS put on an annual Flower Show at the Utica Public Library. Many of our members enter designs in the floral design categories, horticulture specimens along with container grown plants, and also photographs and artistic crafts.
Youth Programs: To help educate the youth of our community about gardening and our natural environment, we provide scholarships to 2 graduates from the BOCES Conservation program.
DEC Camp Scholarship: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's summer camps combine environmental education, sportsman education, and outdoor fun for students of ages 11 through 17. Campers explore New York's diverse habitats and learn how human activities affect the environment. Campers solve challenges, learn environmental concepts, practice outdoor skills, and spend the week immersed in nature. Our club sponsors at least one camper a year.
Lily Pond Restoration: In partnership with GreenUtica, we designed a new garden backdrop for the Lily Pond in F.T. Proctor Park. The design is inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr's original sketch and features flowering shrubs and perennials to provide four season interest. With help from local sponsors, volunteers, and the City of Utica Parks and Recreation Department, this garden was planted in the spring of 2021.
Blue Star Memorial Project: Our members support our Blue Star Memorial at the Veteran's Memorial Park in New Hartford, NY.
Financial Support: Our members continue to provide donations to local food pantries and non- profit organizations, World Gardening efforts, and the Parker Scripture Gardens.
